Informal visit for QueenPalmer

The Queen’s eighth visit to New Zealand next February would be a departure from traditional tours, said the Prime Minister, Mr Palmer. He was speaking yesterday after an audience with the Queen, who is in Malaysia during the Commonwealth leaders’ meeting. From February 1 to 16, the Queen will be in residence, mostly at Government House in Wellington and Auckland. Usually, she brings the Royal yacht Britannia. “She hopes to see more of her New Zealand people and learn more of their lives and concerns by meeting them rather than by just appearing before them,” said Mr Palmer. The Queen will open Parliament and close the Commonwealth Games. She will be at Waitangi for the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty. “The Queen will also have the opportunity to meet some direct descendants of those who signed the Treaty at Waitangi and at Other places throughout the country.” Day trips to the South Island are included in the visit. “The Queen will invite New Zealanders to lunch and dine with her and will thereby have the opportunity to get closer to the people of New Zealand than has been possible before,” said Mr Palmer.
