Nelson Mayor in for fourth term

Nelson’s long-serving mayor, Mr Peter Malone, has won a fourth term in office, beating off challenges from two councillors. Mr Malone secured 42 per cent of the total of 7028 votes cast, a majority of 1707 over his nearest rival, Mr Mike Ward, chairman of the city’s administration committee and formerly co-leader of the Values party. Neither Mr Ward nor the other councillor seeking the mayoralty, Mr Kerry Neal, stood for the council and their retirement along with that of two other councillors and defeat of some others at the election means there

will be seven new faces in the 14-member council. In the poll for the Nelson constituency of the Nelson Marlborough Regional Council the top polling candidate was the former Town Clerk of Nelson, Mr Len Ardell, ahead of two conservationist candidates, Mr Craig Potton and Mr Derek Shaw. The fourth seat on the regional council was taken by the Deputy Mayor of Tasman District, Mr Ted Krammer, who had elected to stand for the regional council in the Nelson rather than the Tasman constituency. There was a 70 per cent poll in Nelson.
