Buller mayoralty
The incumbent Westport Mayor, Mr Pat O’Dea, had no problem taking the mayoralty for the new Buller District Council. Mr O’Dea, who did not campaign, won by a clear 1447 votes from the nearest competitor, Roger Brookes, the Buller County chairman. A Westport plumber, Mr Vince Wallis, was third. The three Buller wards ran as expected, with the people with experience in local bodies being returned. Those known for their hard work, such as the Westport ward’s Mrs Jan Coll, raced in, polling
more than 300 votes more than her nearest rival. The Westland County chairman, Mr Durham Havill, who did not campaign because he was overseas on a “Golden Oldies” rugby trip, beat his rival, Mr Henry Pierson, by 1516 votes, for the mayoralty of the new Westland Council. Mr Pierson, the Mayor of Hokitika, who doorknocked daily — being bitten by at least one dog — polled 1100 votes to Mr Havill’s 2617. The Deputy Mayor of Hokitika, Mr Peter Allan, was one of those who lost a position on the new council.
