Judge gives conspirator ‘last chance’

A man sentenced in the District Court yesterday for involvement in a conspiracy to defraud two banks was told by Judge Erber that he was being given a last chance.

Curtis Robert Reeves, aged 25, was remanded to October 18 with a direction that he be treated at a detoxification unit for drug and alcohol addiction. The Judge indicated that after this treatment Reeves would be remanded to Odyssey House for six weeks to determine his suitability for treatment there for his addiction. Reeves had been found guilty by a jury at his trial last month of a charge that on or about March 7 he conspired fraudulently

with Peter Robert Elliott and others to defraud Trustbank Canterbury and Postßank Ltd of $13,981.50. The conspiracy was by agreeing to tender a PostBank cheque which had been altered from $18.50 to $18,500, and to thereby enable the withdrawal of $14,000 by means of a bank cheque made payable to C. R. Reeves. Defence counsel, Mr Rupert Glover, said yesterday Reeves was on the waiting list for detoxification at Kennedy Villa, Sunnyside Hospital. A report from Odyssey House showed Reeves was acceptable for treatment at that institution. He wished to take treatment there.
