Theft at Ice base
By NIGEL MALTHUS United States Navy investigators have flown to McMurdo Base to investigate the theft of SUS2O,OOO from the base canteen. The theft was disclosed yesterday, although it had been discovered soon after the winter supply drops in mid-June. The United States National Science Foundation’s representative in Christchurch, Dr Charles Paul, said the money went missing from the safe at the base “exchange” — a canteen-general store where personnel could buy snacks, drinks, and personal items such as toothpaste.
It appeared someone had obtained the combination or a key, he said. The money could not have been smuggled out of Antarctica before the summer programme began this week. McMurdo has been isolated since the end of February, apart from the winter supply planes, which do not land but drop cargo from low altitude.. , ... . T — Since Tuesday, there have been three return flights in the summer programme. Staff of the Naval Investigation service were believed to have flown south on the first plane.
