Air crash inspectors follow judge’s advice

PA Wellington The inspectors of air accidents have engaged lawyers to represent them after the court of inquiry into the Foxpine Air Charter crash took a procedural turn yesterday. The inquiry, under District Court Judge David Carruthers, spent most of yesterday morning in chambers and, after a short session, adjourned until Monday.

The chief inspector of air accidents, Mr Ron Chippindale, confirmed he had received a letter from the court and on the judge’s recommendation had engaged lawyers. The report on the May 12, 1988, air accident in which nine people died, prepared by the air accident inspector Dmitri Zotov, is yet to be presented. At least two witnesses who have already given evidence are believed to

have been sent similar letters.

Judge Carruthers declined to make any comment last evening. A spokesman said any comment would be made from the Bench.

Judge Carruthers is assisted by a former aircraft engineer, Gordon Willetts, and a former airline captain and air accident inspector, Jack Leech.
