Lischner pair look up to job
Jeff Scott surveys two-year-olds around the Canterbury district.
• The Ashburton trainer, John Lischner, has two juvenile colts “going near enough” and four others progressing satisfactorily. Hello Gorgeous, a colt by successful sire Smooth Fella from Crystal Palace (Lordship—Bronze Queen, 1:58.7), was purchased for $15,500 at the Premier Sale in January. He is closely-related to the former top pacer, Intrepid (16 wins, 1:57). Lord Patron (El PatronLord’s Jewel), is a halfbrother to Garrison’s Image, the winner of five in N.Z. for Lischner and a 1:59.6 winner in the U.S., are his most forward.
“Henry Skinner has driven them in work and thinks they will both win races,” said Lischner.
Others in the team are a Lordship filly from a half-sister by Garrison Hanover to Emcee: a
half-brother by F. Troop to Great Provider which “goes pretty well”; Tartan Clansman (Majestic Chance Rhodesian Lilly), a close relative of 1:54.2 pacer Lord Dalrae, which is a “useful colt” and a Rashad colt from Lady Barbara (Lordship—Barbara Del), thus making him a half-brother to consistent pacer, Anzus.
• Jim Ferguson is hopeful a Noodlum colt called Strike It Lucky will do just that from his Tinwald stable when he gets to the racing stage. Strike It Lucky, which “goes really good,” is from the Alba Counsel mare, Rags To Riches, a half-sister to former promising pacer Jacobstown.
Others he is working are an F. Troop—Millions And Millions colt; a gelded son of F. Troop
and Real Patch and a trotting gelding by Pernod Eden from Shining Star, which also shows promise. • Paul Newton, which does not intend having last season’s smart juvenile filly, Assisi, back in racing trim until Christmas time, also has high hopes for Assisi’s two-year-old brother, Antidote (Vance HanoverRomano).
The Lyndhurst trainer is also preparing Really Motoring, a colt son of the promising National Bloodstock stallion, New York Motoring, for the Wai-
mate Club’s Golden Slipper Stakes in December. Really Motoring, from the same family as Dundas (1:57.5), Wing Commander and Templar (1:55), all good performers for the late Ted Lowe, ran his last 800 m in 61 and 400 m in 28 seconds when second to Supreme Step at the Ashburton trials in early August.
The third foal of the Valerian mare, Durham Town, Really Motoring is eligible for the National Bloodstock bonus series later in the season.
• The Sheffield trainer, Denis Smolensk!, is working a trio of juvenile geldings, one by Tight Connection’s sire, Soky’s Atom (1:53.6), and two by the Smolensk! family’s 1985 Great Northern Derby winner, Nardinski
(1:59.6). The soky’s Atom gelding, purchased at this year’s International Sale at Karaka, is the second foal from the 1983 Victorian Oaks winner, Tiger Dale (by Tiger Wave).
Tiger Dale is from a half-sister to the former fine pacer of the 19605, Waitaki Hanover (16 wins, Auckland Cup, N.Z. Free-For-All), and from the same family as the 1987 N.Z. Messenger winner, Rostriever Hanover. Nardinski, also winner of the 1984 N.Z. Juvenile Championship, is represented by Wardinski (from Tacmiss, a halfsister to former smart juvenile filly Fleetmae), and Kivinski, a halfbrother to the useful trotter, Kivander Banner, and a grandson of the 1972 N.Z. Broodmare of the Year, Atone.
