Bionic Chance could make grand return

By JEFF SCOTT The brilliant racemare, Bionic Chance, faces a tall order in her attempt to make a successful resumption in the Yaldhurst Hotel 20,000 at the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow, but it will be a brave punter who dismisses her as a winning prospect. “She has surprised us now and again in the past, but we are just hoping she goes a good creditable race,” said the mare’s Lauriston co-trainer, Lindsay Kerslake, yesterday. Bionic Chance has spent much of the last 12 months out in the wilderness after cracking a pastern bone on the eve of last year’s D.B. Draught New Zealand Cup. The Majestic Chance mare, in view of her past history of leg problems, has not been risked at any public trials or workouts this time up, but Kerslake, who prepares her with his father, Alister, is satisfied with her progress. “We are quite happy with her, but there is still a bit of room for improvement,” said Kerslake. “A lot of horses run on fitness, but she runs on energy a lot of the time, being such a high-powered mare, so it can be hard to gauge her fitness sometimes,” he added.

The Kerslakes are not looking past tomorrow’s first six-year-old outing for the mare as far as the $400,000 D.B. Draught New Zealand Cup is concerned. She has had a couple of private workouts on the Methven grass track to fit her for tomorrow’s assignment, and has the class to go close at Motukarara and repeat her devastating first-up victory at the same venue last year. If she wins, it will be a notable effort not only by the mare but also an outstanding training feat by the Kerslakes.

Frangelico, another past winner of this open class feature at Motukarara, suggested she was not far off her best with two placings at the New Brighton meeting last month and warrants respect in an open line-up. The eight-year-old Golden Fulla mare was back throughout in last Saturday’s Flying Stakes at Ashburton, but she will relish the grass surface tomorrow.

Question mark There is a question mark over whether the backmarker, Dillon Dean, a newcomer to Colin de Filippi’s Ladbrooks stable this week, will race tomorrow after heavy rain in Canterbury on Wednesday evening and again yesterday. ' "We will have a look at "the track tomorrow before making a final decision,” said de Filippi. “If it is wet, the owners don’t want the horse to run. He hasn’t raced on grass before.” If Dillon Dean is withdrawn, de Filippi will drive stablemate, Michele Bromac, tentatively to be driven by Pat O’Reilly jun. "I don’t think Michele Bromac has ever run on a wet grass track, but we’ll just take a punt and hope she handles it,” said de Filippi. Dillon Dean, a fast late finisher for third in last Saturday’s record-run Flying Stakes at Ashburton, must take plenty of beating in this if he starts, despite giving away starts of 15m in the 2200 m sprint. It is undecided whether Dillon Dean will remain with de Filippi for next week’s Dunedin Cup or return north to Ardmore. Gina Rosa, a brilliant late finisher for second to Wait A Moment at Addington last month, Final Offer, a trial winner on the grass last week at Motukarara, Laser Lad, Wait A Moment and Cardinal Star are others capable of figuring in the finish with the right runs. Vulcan Lady, a fine fourth in last week’s Flying Stakes, should have little difficulty qualifying for next month’s D.B. Draught New Zealand Cup by taking out the Cl and faster fillies and mares’ pace. The C 9 Vance Hanover mare gives away starts of 30m to much lesser opposition and it will be a major surprise if she fails to finish the race on an open class assessment.

Metro Boy, a promising Enterprise gelding and a proven grass track specialist, also looks capable of giving away an up to 30m start to his rivals in the second leg of the T.A.B. double and notching his seventh win in 15 appearances.
