E.E.C. money for farmers —Moyle

PA Wellington The Government wants producers to get maximum benefits from the cash that will come into the country as a result of the sheepmeat deal with European countries, Agriculture Minister Colin Moyle says. “The way in which the money is repatriated is important. “It certainly should not become just a fillup to meat company profits,” he said in a speech to the Institute of Agricultural Science in Wellington. Mr Moyle said the

agreement, negotiated by External Trade and Relations Minister Mike Moore, would enhance producer prospects this season and in the future. “I remain strongly optimistic about the future for world trade in agricultural products. “The governments of the major subsidising countries are now realising that the costs of agricultural protection are unsustainable and they are now starting to do something about it,” he said.

“I believe we will con-

tinue to get steady reductions in subsidies, tariffs and other barriers to international trade in agricultural products.” Mr Moyle said the importance of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade round of negotiations on international trade in agriculture seemed to be underestimated in New Zealand. It could well be one of the most important influences on the future prosperity of the farming industries.
