Sleeping pills sale continues

PA Auckland The sleeping pill halcion will continue to be sold in New Zealand after a United States review of its safety, its distributors say. A United States Food and Drug Administration advisory committee reviewed the drug last week because of reports of bizarre side-effects, including a fatal shooting, hallucinations and amnesia.

The tablets are marketed through the Upjohn Inter-American Company branch in Ellerslie. The general manager, Tom Shing, said yesterday it would continue to market halcion. The F.D.A. review committee had recommended a minor label change to clarify the possible association between amnesia and the dosage, he said. It had also recommended providing patient information on the benzodiazepine group of drugs. “We’re pleased with the outcome of the F.D.A. review which shows the low incidence of side effects from halcion when used properly,” he said. The Health Department said it had not received a r on the review.
