A.I.D.S.

Sir,—Jackie Curtis is concerned about the casual approach to A.1.D.5., but for the wrong reasons. The disease is lethal, but of less danger to New Zealanders than we are told. Almost all the deaths and sufferers here were imported and, while innocents got the virus earlier through contaminated blood, negligible infections arose from the main risk area of sodomy. More than half the homosexuals tested in San Francisco and New York City have been H.I.V. positive, with a lifestyle not adopted here, but the only safeguard for the future is quarantine at entry, as in many countries, the unfortunates being sent back, although incubation periods would make this obvious precaution less than perfect. Behavioural psychology embraces the non-medical approach, identifying risk groups and risky behaviour, while molecular biology concentrates on the behaviour of the family of retroviruses. In the meantime we are fed dangerous rubbish by the Minister of Health. — Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. September 18, 1989.
