Davison has mixed day
Grant Davison’s fortunes at Orari yesterday proved mixed. Davison was stood down after the running of the sixth race, the Fendalton, Woolston and Bishopdale Maiden, after suffering a broken nose just before the race. Davison’s mount, Turf Echo, flung its head back before entering the gates causing the injury. Davison was keen to ride Stormy Weather in the following event but, after being examined by the club doctor, was forced to retire for the day. Davison is confident of riding at Riccarton on Friday. Earlier, he had won on Martinet, which returned a classy effort to take the Geraldine Handicap. The topweight got well out of her ground early and was under pressure to improve from the 800 m. She still seemed too far off the pace at the turn,
but wound up gamely for Davison and won with authority in the end, if only by half a neck. Martinet is headed for the Breeders’ Stakes (1400 m at Riccarton, on October 14. She has won both her starts at Orari.
Davison’s injury did not cost him further wins as the Graeme Rogerson team proved disappointing on the day. Michael Brown was suspended until after October 6 for causing interferennce on Eureka Lad in the Geraldine Handicap, checking Count Nicolai at the turn.
Paul Falvey had earlier been suspended until after the Riccarton meeting on Friday for causing interference in the Carr Maiden when Bijou Leigh went for an opening near the turn.
Both riders are considering appealing their penalties.
