Zamarino looks overdue for win

The capable steeplechaser, Zamarino, gets a good chance to gain an overdue win in the last of the northern feature events, the $15,000 Mapperley Hunt Cup Steeplechase, at Te Rapa today. Zamarino failed to get closer than third — in the Glaxo Steeplechase behind Trlay Boy at Ellerslie in May — in six attempts last season and he has had just one outing this campaign. That was in a hurdle race at Ellerslie on September 9 when fifth to Te Akau Lad. The 10-year-old’s last win was, in fact, at Te Rapa in May, 1988, when he narrowly won the Aber Impo Steeplechase. That season he won three times and picked up five placings. Zamarino is not the flashest jumper in commission, but sticks well and, despite his lack of recent racing, should give a bold account of himself today. Crown Star, a more fluent jumper, could be the hardest to beat, especially if the ground is reasonable. Crown Star’s latest form is not good, but he has not been happy with the heavy tracks. He returned to his best form earlier this year when taking the G. W. Vercoe Steeplechase at Te Rapa.
