Longreach reaches 12,700km

By Dave Wilson

The bright idea of Qantas 747 captain Len Krawczyk is being painted bn the fuselage of each of the airline’s 12 new Boeing 747-400 ultra-longhaul jets.

The airline has given its 747-400 series the name Longreach, painted in

gold lettering below the windowline near the nose. Behind the name there was a competition for Qantas staff to find a suitable name for the 400 series aircraft. Len Krawczyk won the competition with Longreach, capturing the extremely long range of

the new 747 (12,700 km with a full payload) and at the same time commemorating the Central Queensland town that played a significant role in the airline’s history. Longreach, the town, was where Qantas began scheduled services in 1922.
