With Wilson and Mathews playing consistent draw bowls, Papanui went out to a lead of 94 afer five of the 12-end final. On the next end Bright showed his class when he drew the shot after being six shots down on the head. Papanui edged ahead steadily to lead 12-7 after nine ends, but some fine draw bowls by Hornby’s No. 2, Don Marshall, enabled them to. score a three on the eleventh end to reduce the deficit to one point. On the last end Hornby held the lead when the skips changed ends, but Ellis’s first bowl clipped out one shot to tie the game, Bright was wide with his last bowl, and with the final bowl of the match Ellis calmly removed the shot bowl to take the title. Ellis’s semi-final match was against New Brighton’s Bob Burford, who gained an early lead, 4-3. But steady bowls by, the Papanui trio brought them a three-point win. Bright’s semi-final against the strong Richmond team skipped by Bill Trembath was one-way traffic for the Hornby team.
