Police chase ambulance
PA Auckland A psychiatric patient who stole an ambulance was caught by North Shore police yesterday after ramming another vehicle and clipping a patrol car. The 24-year-old man will not be charged, however, because he is already committed to psychiatric care.
Detective Sergeant Pat Handcock said that about 1 p.m. the patient took the ambulance from the North Shore. Hospital where he had been receiving medical and psychiatric treatment. The ambulance was pursued by the police for several minutes. Detective Sergeant Handcock said it was on the wrong
side of the road several times. The pursuit ended when the ambulance struck a car at Glenfield. The female driver of the car was taken to North Shore Hospital with shock and minor injuries but was treated and discharged. The psychiatric patient was not hurt in the crash.
