Man to face trial on arson charges
A man, aged 60, will face trial by jury in the High Court on three charges of arson and one of attempted arson.
After a preliminary hearing in the District Court yesterday,Messrs J. B. Andersen and A. L. Mclvor, Justices of the
Peace, committed the defendant, Ronald Gordon Kay, an invalid beneficiary, for trial on all four charges. They were of wilfully setting fire to two dwellings in January, wilfully setting fire to a partiallycompleted accommodation block at the Salvation
Army’s premises on April 22, and attempting to set fire to the crafts studio at the Arts Centre on May 8. Counsel for Kay, Mr Stan Barker, accepted statements of evidence of the 12 prosecution witnesses by consent for the preliminary hearing, and
they did not have to appear in Court to give their evidence. Mr Barker reserved the defence. On counsel’s application, before Judge Erber, Kay was remanded to Sunnyside Hospital for a month. Sergeant Pat Creasey appeared for the police.
