Gunman arrested Several Linwood streets were cordoned by the police early this morning during an armed offenders’ alert. Up to five blocks around an address in Avonside Drive were cordoned when a man was reported to be wandering the streets carrying a firearm, said the police. Tourist killed An American tourist was killed and. his female companion injured when the car in which they were travelling collided with a stock truck south of Ruawai on State highway 12. The dead man was . Jack Phillip Hermann, aged 73, of California. The woman was admitted to Dargaville Hospital for observation but was transferred later to Whangarei Hospital’s intensive-care unit. Sergeant Jim Goodland, of Dargaville, said the tourists had arrived in New Zealand from Australia only six hours previously and were travelling south in a rental car. — PA. Hastings woman dies A Hastings woman, aged 56, has died in Hastings Hospital nearly two months after she was hit by a car. Mrs Waina Morell was in the intensive-care unit for 51 days. — PA. Missing pair safe An Upper Hutt woman and her child, aged two, missing since Monday, have returned to their Totara Park home. A police spokesman said Mrs Jill Cunningham, aged 31, returned “of her own accord.” She had been interviewed by the police, said the spokesman. The police said they would not investigate the case further. — PA. London defence post Captain John Leonard, the Ministry of Defence intelligence director, has been appointed head of New Zealand’s defence liaison staff in London. Captain Leonard will be promoted to the rank of acting commodore when he takes up the post on September 20. He was bom in Christchurch and joined the Navy in 1959. He flew helicopters from 1967 and commanded the frigates Waikato (1980-81) and Southland (1986-87). - PA.
