Games cake stall raises $3308
The Commonwealth Gamese budget was boosted by $3308 as a result of a cake stall held in Cathedral Square yesterday. Organised by Radio 3ZB, the stall attracted cakes, buns, biscuits and bread from bakeries throughout Christchurch. Games souvenirs were also sold.
Organisers hoped to open the stall at noon, but by 11a.m. people were four-deep! around the 15 trestles, laden with produce, said a 3ZB announcer, Barry Corbett.
“There would have been a riot if we had waited until lunchtime.” The cake stall raised $l9OB of the total amount, and the souvenirs $l4OO. Help in selling the goods came from members of the Rangiora Training Institute, the Kiwanis and A.M.P. General Insurance.
Everything was sold by 1 p.m.
Commonwealth Games officials say they are delighted with the public’s positive reponse to news of a possible shortfall of funds to make next year’s Games a success.
The fact that the response had come from several parts of the country, including Christchurch, was pleasing, the Games chairman, Mr David Johnson, said yesterday.
