In brief
Woman attacked A Japanese woman kicked an attacker who tried to force her into her inner-city flat on Tuesday evening. The woman, in her late 20s, was grabbed from behind at 11.50 p.m. in the foyer of a block of flats in Peterborough Street. The man pushed her upstairs but when they got to a landing she kicked him down a stairway and fled to the safety of her room. The attacker is described as European, aged between 20 and 30, with short dark hair. The woman is working in Christchurch as a travel agent. Woman stabs man A man was stabbed in the shoulder and arm by a woman who asked him for drugs in Cathedral Square on Tuesday, the incident occurred at 4.40 p.m. near the men’s toilets and was reported to the police by a member of the public. The man has refused to cooperate. The woman is described as a Maori, aged 21, with wavy, shoulder-length hair with a red tinge. She was wearing blue jeans, “ug” boots- and a pink jacket with blue strips. It is the second stabbing in Cathedral Square during the last fortnight. On August 28 a man was stabbed in the back near the men’s toilets. A man has been arrested in relation to the incident. Pharmacy burgled A burglar made an unsuccessful attempt to steal drugs from the Parklands Pharmacy yesterday. The front door was smashed in and the premises searched at 5.15 a.m. Nothing was taken. Baby locked in The police were called when an eight-week-old baby was accidentally locked in the bathroom of a Mount Pleasant Road house yesterday. The baby’s mother left the room briefly and the door closed behind her. Inspector J. D. D. Reilly said the mother had managed to open the door before the police arrived. Red Cross change The Red Cross in Christchurch is now part* of a new Canterbury-West Coast region in a pilot scheme to test regionalisation for the future restructuring of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. The Canterbury-West Coast region officially started on September 1, and brings together the Red Cross centres of North Canterbury, Ashburton, Geraldine-Temuka, Timaru, Waimate, Hokitika, Greymouth and the Buller branch. The Red Cross hopes to increase its activities and membership through the new structure.
