Lifestyles roadshow will tour country
PA Auckland A $5 million roadshow depicting New Zealand lifestyles — past, present and future — will tour the country as part of the 1990 commemorations. The show will feature a $1.2 million audio-visual along with performances and displays that include the history of television, Ministry of Defence and
police memorabilia, and a pageant of costumes from 1840 to today. The roadshow plans were announced by the 1990 Commission’s chief executive, Mr Don Hutchings, at an Auckland Rotary Club meeting.
The show would be produced by the designer of New Zealand’s pavilion at the Brisbane Expo, Logan Brewer.
It would open in Christchurch on April 14 and travel to 34 venues throughout New Zealand, finishing on Auckland’s North Shore on December 2.
Mr Hutchings said events planned for the commemorations so far included a “multi-media” opening day, the restoration of five Maori canoes, and the making of 17 for Waitangi Day commemorations, and a telethon.
For the “Living Treasures” project, the organisers had asked other countries to send eminent people to share their skills with New Zealanders.
A collection of 50 works by contemporary New Zealand artists would be shown throughout the country, a “Historic Document Search” was already under way as a pilot scheme in Wairarapa. Mr Hutchings said there would be more than 50 international conferences, as well as smaller activities organised by 150 community committees.
