NZPA-Reuter London The police escorted 20 youths off a North Sea ferry for questioning yesterday after disturbances by England soccer fans forced the ferry to abandon a voyage from Britain to Sweden. About 150 English soccer fans were among 815 passengers on board the Scandinavian Seaways ferry Tor Britannia, which left the eastern port of Harwich for Gothenburg yesterday. The ship turned back after reports of disturbances on board caused by heavy drinking and drug-taking among the soccer fans, heading for a World Cup qualifying match between England and Sweden in Stockholm today. A telex message from a British police officer .on board said a missing youth, identified as a 24-year-old Englishman, had apparently jumped overboard when another soccer fan let off a fire extinguisher. The ship, helped by Dutch Coast Guard vessels and a West German helicopter, searched for him without success. The message, to Lloyds shipping agents in London, said the decision not to continue the 24-hour crossing was made when the disturbances threatened the ship, crew and other passengers.
