Expert supports surgery delay
NZPA-AAP Sydney Prominent A.I.D.S. expert, Professor Tony Basten, yesterday supported a Sydney surgeon’s decision to delay surgery on a homosexual man until the patient had been tested for the A.I.D.S. virus. Simon Ferguson, aged 29, has complained to the Equal Opportunities Tribunal that he was denied elective surgery at Rachel Forster Hospital, Sydney, in August, 1985. Mr Ferguson has alleged he was discriminated against by Dr Richard West and the Central Sydney Area Health Service
Dr West told the tribunal he had decided to delay the removal of a benign lump in Mr Ferguson’s chest for medical and safety reasons. Professor Basten said the patient was in a highrisk group and it would have been in everyone’s best interests that his HIV status be clarified.
The hearing is continuing.
