Candidate says look to cause
The key to solving safety problems in the community is to eradicate their social causes, says a Christchurch City Council candidate, Mrs Judith Bruce.
Mrs Bruce said members of local government had to grasp problems at grassroots level and face the problems of falling living standards. “We must overcome the unemployment situation by becoming responsible for initiating investment into Canterbury so lifting our self-esteem and civic pride.
“We must initiate in our citizens a better understanding and acceptance of cultural differences and put aside the petty prejudices. Above all we must become a caring society.” Mrs Bruce, a candidate in the Burwood ward, said too much emphasis during the debate about safety had been placed on the effect rather than the cause. Unless the causes were addressed the problems would nevpr • be solved. ’fr 1
