Labour ‘faces fade-out’
PA Wellington The Labour Government’s honeymoon after appointing Geoffrey Palmer as Prime Minister would end this week with a pro-frigate vote, Sir Robert Jones predicted yesterday. Sir Robert said a vote to buy frigates would upset New Zealanders and
Labour’s “imagery” would start to fade. His comments follow a “New Zealand Herald”National Research Bureau poll showing 47 per cent of voters believed Labour’s change of leadership had improved its chances of winning next year’s general election.
More than 50 per cent also believed a change of leader would enhance National’s chances. Sir Robert has described the appointment of Mr Palmer after Mr Lange’s resignation a month ago as a blunder. Mr Palmer had done nothing to change his views in the last month.
