The manager of the Parkroyal Hotel, Christchurch, Mr Greg Lee, who was named Hotelier of the Year in the American Express Hospitality Premmy Awards for 1989. The hotel had two other successes. Its executive chef, Mr Charles Neville, gained the Industrial Hygiene Award and the executive housekeeper, Ms Frances Noble, was third in the Housekeeper of the Year award.
Mr Graham Brown, of Scarborough Fare, of Christchurch, won the award for the Restaurant Chef of the Year. The presentations were made at the Sheraton Auckland Hotel and Towers. Mr Michael Hooper said the awards recognised the top achievers in the hospitality industry in New Zealand. The judges considered nominees’ attention to detail, recovery from errors, presentation and establish-
ments. In addition, nominees’ contributions to the industry as a whole were evaluated. A spokesman for the judges, Mr Rodney Walshe, said Mr Lee’s attributes fell into two main areas. First, he demonstrated hands-on management skills, being able to deal with the tour-bus operator, relate to guests, manage staff and run his hotel, and second, he applied these skills in a top-class establishment
