Airmen under rent cloud
PA Palmerston North The Ohakea Air Base Commander, Group Captain Rick Bulger, says people employed to defend their country, will have to rely on Social Welfare assistance to make ends meet.
It was morally wrong, but that was what would happen if the Armed Services Pay Review went through unaltered. Junior ranks faced no increase in wages, but massive rent rises, he said yesterday.
Each of the base’s 207 houses had been individually assessed and most occupants faced their rents being doubled or in some cases trebled. “The lower ranks are not going to be able to make ends meet and they’re going to have to rely on the State, which I feel for someone employed to defend their country . is morally wrong.” <
He described it as a disgusting situation, which he hoped would be averted. . ,
“It’s also purely impractical for the Defence Department to increase rents and then personnel go to Social Welfare for money to pay,” he said. Depending on budgets and family situations, base personnel would be eligible for financial assistance from the Social Welfare Department of up to $2OO a week.
