Moyle to retire at end of term

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington

The Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries for the last five years, Mr Moyle (Otara), has announced that he will retire from politics at next year’s General, Election.

He joins two other Cabinet Ministers — the Minister of Defence, Mr Tizard (Panmure), and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall (Wanganui) — in not seeking re-election. Other Labour M.P.s to announce their retirement are the former Minister of Revenue, Mr Trevor de Cleene (Palmerston North), Mr Trevor Young (Eastern Hutt) and Ms Anne Collins (East Cape). The National M.P.s to announce their retirement are the former Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mr George Gair (North Shore), the former Minister of Lands and Forests, Mr Venn Young (Waitotara), the former Minister of Education, Mr Merv Wellington (Papakura), Mr lan McLean (Tarawera) and Mr Derek Angus (Wallace).

Mr Moyle was first elected to Parliament in 1963. He has represented four South Auckland electorates since then — Manukau, Mangere, Hunua and Otara. The only break came when he was forced to resign in 1977, on being

found to have mislead Parliament over a personal explanation, but he returned at the time of the 1981 General Election. He was born in 1929. He was a school teacher before entering Parliament but has since become a farmer. During 1972-75, Mr Moyle was the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests and Science for the Kirk-Rowling Labour Government. He was a key member of Labour's* 3 pre-1972 strategy committee that ran the Marlborough byelection campaign victory in 1970 and then the General Election campaign. By the time he retires, Mr Moyle will have spent more than nine years as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, and 22 years in Parliament.
