Missing hunters found near hut
PA Rotorua Two young hunters missing in Whirinaki Forest near Murupara for two days were lifted out by helicopter yesterday hungry and cold, but otherwise well, the police said. The two, aged 16 and 19, had been staying at Central Whirinaki Hut with a third youth and went for a two-hour hunt last Sunday afternoon. They failed to return to the hut that night. When they did not return on Monday their friend walked out of the bush to alert the police and a helicopter search started at 6.30 a.m. yesterday.
About an hour later smoke from a camp fire was spotted and a Department of Conservation forest officer was lowered to the spot to walk the youths back to the hut only a mile away. Sergeant Peter Clarke of Murupara said the youths left the hut on Sunday without food but wearing “fairly adequate” clothing. When they realised they were lost they set up a camp site, lighting a fire and erecting a bivouac. The next day they tried to find the Whirinaki River without success.
