Fast time on walkway

Five Christchurch runners completed the St James walkway in the Lewis Pass in 8h 56min in a training run recently. It is believed to be one of the fastest times for the walk, if not a record. The runners, Colin Martin, Stuart Payne, Dave Wells, Peter Jackson and John Hassan, are all members of the New Zealand

Ultra Runners’ Association. They used the run as training for the annual Port Hills 100 km race, which is on September 23. The group started from the top end of the track near Lewis Pass at 6.30 a.m. and the only stops they had were at each hut for a snack and drink. Each carried a light backpack.

Martin, who won the inaugural Christchurch 24-hour race last May, said that a group of mountain bikers started with them but were left behind when they had to carry their bikes through the more rugged sections.

The conditions were wet for most of the way but good underfoot.
