Rookie bowler in title win

Miriam Whale, a first-year player, must have blessed the day she took up indoor bowls, when, as a last-minute replacement lead for the New Zealand singles champion, Gary Lawson, she shared vitory with him in the Osborne Cup pairs at Kearneys Road on Saturday. In spite of her inexperience, she was able to spread her bowls into a variety of positions, which enabled Lawson to play at his scintillating best.

A relaxed Lawson treated spectators to a full range of brilliant shots. One of these, a great running bowl on the sixth end of the final against Noel Tomlinson and Grant Lange, took out an opposition shot and gave the Miami Allstars pair a vital four to put them 7 - 3 up. On the next end Tomlinson looked to be heading for a five, but Lawson drew brilliantly with his last bowl to score a one and deprive his opponents of any chance of bridging the gap.

The Whale-Lawson combination went on to win, 9-4. In his semi-final, Lawson looked quite comfortable against Gary and Ann Harris, until a tenacious fight-back by Harris brought him from 7 -2 down to be only two

down going into the last end. With only Lawson’s last bowl to play, Harris was holding the necessary three, with other bowls in good position, but the national champion showed how he gained that title, with a superb gentle running shot to take the point. In the other semi-final, Tomlinson and Lange crushed Dean and Joanne Hunt. The latter pair, fresh from winning the champion of champions husband and wife tournament the previous week-end, had no answer to the decisive play of their opponents, and went down 14 - 8. Results: Quarter-finals: G. Lawson 9, T. Thompson 7; D. Hunt 11, H. Miller 7; N. Tomlinson 12, R. Hamel 6; G. Harris 5, T. Clark 2. Semi-finals: Lawson 8, Harris 5; Tomlinson 14, Hunt 8. Final: Lawson 9, Tomlinson
