Australian frigate to visit
Christchurch people will get the chance for a close encounter with an Australian frigate, with the visit to Lyttelton of H.M.A.S. Darwin on September 22. The frigate will be open to the public on Sunday, September 24, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Built in the United States and launched in March, 1982, the FFG
class multi-functional warship carries air-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles and a helicopter. Under the command of Captain G. P. Kable, the Darwin has a complement of 21 officers, 36 senior ratings and 150 juniors. The resident naval officer in Christchurch, Lieutenant Commander Ken Johnston, said the ship’s company were looking forward to snow
ski-ing and bungee jumping during their brief stay. A disco will be arranged to entertain the sailors at H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus. Lieutenant Commander Johnston said the goodwill visit was the first time an Australian Navy vessel had shown the flag at Lyttelton for two years. The Darwin is also scheduled to visit Timaru for two days later in the month.
