Chamber music
The final recital in the University School of Music series, Masterpieces of Chamber Music, will be presented in the James Hay Theatre at 8 p.m. on Monday, September 11. The programme will consist of two piano quartets, the Mozart E flat K 493, and the Brahms C minor Op 60. The third work will be the Duo for violin and cello by Kodaly. In addition to the two permanent staff members, Jan Tawroszewicz, violin, and Maurice Till, piano, the performer will include two American string players. The cellist Gayle Smith has been in Christchurch since May on a short-term appointment to the School of Music and has already appeared in several recitals in the city. Nancy Uscher, viola, during her brief visit, will be heard only in the one evening recital and in a lunchtime recital on September 7 at the School of Music. After study at the Juilliard School in New York and the Royal College of Music in London, Nancy Uscher graduated with a doctorate in performance from New York University. She has performed as a soloist in concertos and in recitals in Europe and America and has appeared at prestigious music festivals including the Puerto Rico Casals, Spoleto, Venice Biennale, Israel and Mozart Kennedy Centre. Nancy Uscher has also contributed articles on a wide range of musical subjects to several publications. Gayle Smith will be making the last major appearance of her five month university appointment at this recital.
