Being a Maori actor is a disadvantage, “because there just aren’t that many plays written for dark-skinned folk,” says Joseph Otimi. Since joining Puawai, a division of the Polynesian Performing Arts Trust, he says he has felt really at home. Otimi plays Wiremu Kingi in “The Waitara Purchase” and is also taking the lead role in “The Adventures of Hatupatu,” both being performed at the Elmwood Playhouse this week.
