Nuclear stance

Sir,—The potential for annihilation with atomic weapons is undeniable, and the monstrosity they represent must be deplored. But the selective criticism towards America by Larry Ross would appear to have sinister motives. The deafening silence towards Russia and China leads one to that conclusion. Logic would suggest that, if patriotic to New Zealand, "the nuclear-free and peace brigade” would be more concerned at the massive build-up of nuclear weapons by the two communist giants. This is particularly so in view of their outstanding ability to kill people and conquer neutral countries. The United States is not exactly squeaky clean, but I am sure that most Kiwis would prefer America to hold the balance of power. The eventual alternative could be an aggressive China desperate to expand her millions, or the Soviet Union climaxing its plan for world domination. The tragedy of Tibet and the slaugh-

ter of Afghanistan proves that communism is no respecter of nations. — Yours, etc.,
