Union claims 8 p.c. increase

PA Wellington Claims for an 8 per cent increase in wages and allowances will be made for some workers covered by the Distribution Workers’ Federation next month, the federation said on Monday. Workers under the retail (non food) employees’

award, the grocery and supermarket employees’ award, and the stores and warehouse award, are involved.

The federation represents about 58,000 workers in five affiliated unions grouped into three divisions. Negotiations for each division will start

next month. The drivers’ award advocate, Mr Jackson Smith, said drivers would seek a base rate of $9 an hour within the road transport cartage and contracting industries. The two awards cover up to 15,000 drivers and machine operators.
