Call to drop rental review
PA Wellington The Armed Forces’ rental review should be scrapped in recognition of the nature of being in the armed services, the Opposition spokesman on defence, Mr Don McKinnon, said yesterday. The present rent review, which will see Armed Forces’ accommodation charges brought in line with the open market, was administratively unsound, morale-destroying, and produced only illusory savings, Mr McKinnon said.
“Many personnel are saying to hell with the Armed Forces if rents are to be doubled or trebled at Waiouru, let alone increasing four-fold at Devonport and Hobsonville,” he said.
“Many of these service men and women have little choice as to where they serve if they wish to pursue a successful career.
“The Minister of Defence should drop the whole scheme in recognition that Armed Forces personnel take the good with the bad throughout their service.” He said Mr Tizard should change the policy over the rentals as the Government had done over its plans to increase teacher housing rentals to market rates.
