Stable newcomers provide quinella

By

JEFF SCOTT

Mister Gaines and Fair Chip, newcomers to John Lischner’s Ashburton stable, quinellaed the C 5 and faster pace at the Motukarara harness racing trials yesterday. The former joined the stable after racing at Ashburton at the end of February, but was spelled immediately. "He is a big slab-sided gelding and had lost-a bit of condition, so he had a spell with us and has been back in for a good while now. The owner decided it was probably easier getting him trained up here, where the racing is close at hand, this season,” said Lischner of the former West Otago pacer yesterday. "Colin (de Filippi), who drove him yesterday, was happy with him, but I would expect our other horse, Great Provider, to go better over 2000 m in their race at Addington on Saturday,” added Lischner. Mister Gaines, an upstanding six-year-old by Gaines Minbar, made most of the running yesterday and held out Fair Chip (Simon Adlam) by a head in 3:26.2 for the 2600 m, the leader sprinting in from the 800 m in 59.2 and quickening over his last 400 m in 28.1. The winner of six races and six times placed in 31 starts for earnings of close to $24,000, Mister Gaines has drawn well at barrier five on Saturday. Great Provider has drawn barrier seven in the C5-C7 Sydenham Bakery Mobile Pace.

Fair Chip remained with Lischner after the N.Z. Metropolitan meeting last month and a final decision on whether he will remain at Ashburton until after the N.Z. Cup meeting in November will be made next week.

“He has had a problem with his shoeing and has been forging rather badly. We feel he is better than when he raced at Addington last month, but there is not enough hoof growth there to do exactly what we want,” he said. The Southland-owned pacer, which has no race this week, may have another outing at the Ashburton trials on Thursday. Lischner is also trying' Fair Chip with a nose-roll, as he felt the Transport Chip gelding was "looking down his nose” when worked.

Lischner, whose team last season were in fine early form before being flattened by a virus, ended a drought of 10, months off the winner’s list when Aquatic was successful at Forbury Park, last Saturday. “I was starting to think I would never train another winner. Aquatic, at the N.Z. Cup meeting last year, was my last winner but the virus went right through the stable,” he said.

High Gun, which trailed Mister Gaines yesterday, held third, a neck away, with Gasthof finishing on for fourth. Hayden Bromac, which has returned to the lan Shinn stable after racing in the north for the Roy and Barry

Purdon stable over the winter, was never clear, finishing next. Franco Glide, a sevenlength debut winner at Oamaru last month, led all the way in the Cl and 2 pace yesterday. A leading prospect for the First D.B. Draught Superstar Four-Year-Old Trial at Addington on Saturday, Franco Glide paced the 2600 m in 3:28.2 yesterday, being untroubled to sprint in from the 800 m in 59.6 and 400 m in 29.1.

Chips, which trailed, Corbett’s Corner and Imperial Guest, chased him home.

Qualifiers

Sylvan Ruler (3c Nood-lum-Sylvan Globe), trained at Templeton by Dave Anderson, took time honours among the seven pacing qualifiers yesterday, leading for most of the way to return 3:14.1 for 2400 m. He quickened over his last 800 m in 59.2 and sprinted in from the 400 m stylishly in 28.6. Filipe (3c Silk LegacyFrancesca), a member of the lan Shinn stable, was three-quarters of a length back, second, at the line in 3:14.3.

Other 2400 m qualifiers were: Lamarque (3c Silk Legacy-Living Doll) in 3:14.8 (last 400 m in 29.3); Lady Olive (4m NoodlumBonnie Bigshot) in 3:19.4; Smooth McCoy (3c Smooth Felia-Hanover Maize) in 3:17; and Parisian Royal (4g Nero’s 8.8.-Royal Cherie) in 3:18.5.

Trix Galore, a three-year-old son of Niatrix

and Favlova in Brian Court’s West Melton team, won the 2600 m pacers’ qualifying heat in 3:33 to gain his ticket.
