Extensions approved The Marist Rugby Football Club’s plans to extend its Mandeville Street clubrooms have been approved by the Riccarton Borough Council. House haulage halted Friends and neighbours of a young Henderson couple linked arms and stood under their house to stop it being removed. Midwives’ request On National Midwives Day today, midwives are approaching women and their doctors to ask that midwives deliver all babies. "The Press” incorrectly reported yesterday that the chairwoman of the Canterbuury and Westland region of the College of Midwives, Mrs Norma Campbell, said the college was seeking to have midwives recognised as medical practitioners. Mrs Campbell actually said the college wanted midwives to be recognised as autonomous practitioners. At present, a doctor must be present at all births, but midwives want the Nurses Act changed to allow them to deliver normal births without a doctor present. N.Z.-Malaysia air link The Government has given the go-ahead for a direct air service between New Zealand and Malaysia from October, the Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Jeffries, has said. The agreement allows a New Zealand airline to operate through an intermediate point to the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur and beyond to any three other destinations in both Asia and Western Europe.—PA. BNZ cancer scheme A term deposit scheme has been set up by the Bank of New Zealand to support the Canterbury and Westland division of the Cancer Society. The bank will pay 1 per cent per annum for 12-month deposits, to the Cancer Society. The term deposits must be a minimum of $lOOO. They may be made at the bank’s branches in Canterbury, Mid and South Canterbury, Buller and the West Coast.
