Nuclear stance

Sir,—P. J. O’Rourke “tries to make sense of the world’s absurdities” (August 26), yet embraces the ultimate absurdity, atomic weapons. What could be more outrageous and barbaric than depending on threats of global nuclear annihilation to “prevent another world war.” In his smug republicanism he criticises New Zealand for rejecting United States nuclear madness and seeking a better way to achieve security and world survival. Given nuclear proliferation, and that nuclear annihilation is in hair-trigger readiness, and could

begin from any of a variety of precipitating events, it is eminently realistic for New Zealand to have kicked out “the nuke ships,” which are potential floating Chernobyls, as well as nuclear targets. There is nothing funny about American nuclear arrogance, so well exemplified by P. J. O’Rourke. He is certainly no Mark Twain. More like Groucho Marx. — Yours, etc., LARRY ROSS. Secretary, N.Z. Nuclear-free Peacemaking Association. August 26, 1989.
