City development
Sir, —Why are we allowing our city to become Americanised? There has been enough protesting in Christchurch for, surely, the Christchurch City Council to realise we do not want this any more than our tourists do. Tourists do not want to arrive at the “heart” of Christchurch to find a McDonald’s; they can go anywhere else in the world to see one. They do not want it, we do not need it.—Yours, etc., S. E. MCGREGOR, A. J. and M. M. DEYELL. August 25, 1989.
Sir, —Your article on the relative merits of preserving buildings and the place of the Historic Places Trust (August 26) was timely. Sites of major significance such as the United Service Hotel should be developed with respect for the surroundings and in harmony with the city. I believe that developers and property owners have a moral obligation to ensure that the best possible use is made of important and historic sites. Some buildings have been erected in the central business area that do nothing for the fabric and style of the city. There should be a procedure to ensure that before decisions are made to redevelop a site such as the United Service Hotel that the owners, city council, Historic Places Trust and others can have the opportunity to talk over the issue. — Yours etc.,
R. W. SKJELLERUP. August 28, 1989.
