‘Family portrait’ planned

NZPA-Reuter Pasadena, California The spacecraft Voyager 2 may be given one last spectacular task — a “family portrait” of the planets. It would be a flamboyant public farewell for the tough old spacecraft which has spent 12 years in space photographing four planets and has run out of planetary missions. “We are considering such a photo possibility, although we may not get all the planets in the photograph,” said Doctor Edward Stone, chief scientist of the Voyager project, yesterday. The ideal time to take such a photograph would be in six months. The spacecraft is powered by nuclear generators that turn the heat of decaying plutonium into electric power.
