More than 1000 primary and intermediate pupils from throughout Canterbury will perform at the Primary Schools Music Festival, in the Christchurch Town Hall in September and October. As part of the preparations, about 400 pupils were chosen to take part in a three-day music school at Heaton Intermediate. They were chosen through auditions at all the schools taking part in the festival, said a festival organiser, Mr lan Thorpe. About 100 pupils were chosen for the orchestra, with 100 in both the junior and senior special choirs and about 30 in each of the electronic percussion, recorder ensemble and wind sections, he said. These pupils would perform each night. Another 650 pupils, to change each performance, would make up a mass choir.
“It will run for eight nights, the eighth night being a jubilee night, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the festivals,” said Mr Thorpe. About six representatives from each school would form the mass choir for this performance. Included in the programme would be items from each festival held over the 50 years, he said. The festival will be held from September 26 to September 29 and from October 10 to October 13.
