Midwives Day
National Midwives Day will be celebrated in Christchurch tomorrow by a release of balloons in Cathedral Square at midday. Members of the College of Midwives will also distribute daffodils to women in Canterbury Maternity hospitals. Tomorrow is the deadline for submissions on changes to the Nurses Act. The college wants the changes to allow midwives to be recognised as medical practitioners, says the chairwoman of its Canterbury and West Coast region, Mrs Norma Campbell. Midwives provided a safe, costeffective service that was adaptable to the changing needs of women and their families, she said. In support of their proposal, midwives will approach women and their doctors and ask that all babies be delivered by a midwife.
