German squash seed beaten

PA Hamilton The junior women’s world squash championship lost its first seeded player last night when West German Daniela Grzenia was stunned by Englishwoman Melissa Fryer. Fryer, who was not seeded, comprehensively beat the third seed in three sets, although the West German professional had her chances to get back into the match. She conceded the first two sets but took control of the third to lead 8-7 with service, but Fryer dug deep to claw her way back into the set and win 10-8. The West German manager, Karl-Heinz Balzier, said it was a disappointment to see his No. 2 player knocked out of the tournament at this early stage, especially as Grzenia had beaten Fryer in the northern spring. West Germany still has a player in the final eight, 15-year-old Sabine Schone, who disposed of another of the battling Scottish players, Helen Nicoll. The first set was no contest, Schone taking it 9-0 with very little exertion. The players did not take their break between games but stayed on court and went straight into the second set. From there it was a better contest, although the powerful West German always had control and took the game in three sets. New Zealand will be represented in the quarter finals by Rotorua’s Lynora Hati, the New Zealand No. 1 who beat Shannon McNamara (Australia) in four sets yesterday. Hati made a slow start, losing the first set, 7-9 — the first she has dropped in the tournament — but battled back to win the next three.
