Local body politicians sponsor rugby trophy
Two local body politicians have sponsored an inter-city trophy for the winner of the annual Can-terbury-Auckland rugby clssli Ms Vicki Buck and Dame Cath Tizard, candidates for the mayoralty in Christchurch and Auckland respectively, are deidedly parochial about the trophy.
Ms Buck insisted it be made in Christchurch. The Auckland Mayor has already arranged for it to be taken north after Saturday’s match between Canterbury and Auckland at Lancaster Park.
The Buck-Tizard trophy is up for grabs for the first time at Saturday’s match.
Ms Buck says it is an inter-city trophy, rather than an official trophy of either the Auckland or Canterbury Rugby Unions. It will be held in the Civic Offices of the city of the winning tehm.
The Canterbury Rugby Union was advised yesterday of the trophy, Ms Buck said.
