Nordstrom makes final

NZPA Duisberg The New Zealand record holder, Kay Nordstrom, has qualified for the final of the women’s javelin at the world student games. Nordstrom, aged 21, is the only member of the eightstrong New Zealand team to qualify for a final at the games, which finish today. The Canterbury University bachelor of arts student was

ranked eighteenth in the 23woman event, but threw an excellent 54.54 m to qualify in eleventh position. Nordstrom’s best of 57.36 m was set earlier this year. The team coach, Kerry Hill, said although Nordstrom’s form was good, a medal would be an outstanding result as the standard of competition was extremely high. The Canterbury athlete will travel to Barcelona for the

World Cup athletics meet next month. In other events, hurdlers Paul Lloyd (Wellington) and Grant McNeil (Otago) finished sixth in their respective 110 m hurdle heats. Lloyd equalled his personal best with a 14.485ec effort, while McNeil, the national champion, clocked 14.195ec despite suffering from bowel trouble. Neither managed to better the stiff 13.60 finals qualifying time.
