Final rebel named

NZPA-AFP London A Sussex batsman, Alan Wells, was named as the final member of the England rebel team to tour South Africa starting in January. The uncapped 27-year-old replaces Roland Butcher, who pulled out of the six-week trip to the Republic after condemnation from fellow black sportsmen. Wells’ defection is another blow for England’s selectors, who would surely have offered him a place on next year’s second string tour to Zimbabwe, if not a ticket for the senior test series in the West Indies. The younger brother of the Sussex all-rounder, Colin Wells, is enjoying his best season in county cricket, having scored 1580 first-class runs at an average of 56.42. That puts him second only to test batsman Robin Smith in the list of players qualified to play for England.
