Howell bats strongly

NZPA-Reuter London A brilliant second wicket stand of 116 by Auckland’s John Aiken and Canterbury's Llorne Howell put New Zealand in a strong position at the end of the first day of the second -youth cricket test against England at Canterbury, Kent, yesterday. When bad light stopped played 45 minutes early, the Kiwis were 195 for the loss of three wickets with a strong batting line-up still to come. Aiken and Howell moved

the score along with a combination of well-organised defence and some powerful attacking strokes on a difficult wicket. While Aiken mainly played the anchor role, Howell, at 17 the youngest player in the side, hit superb pulled shots and drives. Howell and Simon Wilson put on 31 runs for the third wicket before Howell was dismissed for 87 when a century looked to be within his grasp. He faced 165 balls, hitting 14 fours during his 214 min at the crease.
