Killer bacteria traced to staff
PA Auckland Two staff members of an Otara supermarket have been identified as carriers of salmonella bacteria after investigations into the death of a 12-year-old girl last week.
Further tests are required to determine if the salmonella found in the two New World delicatessen staff was the same strain as that which killed Belinda Nesta lopu. Her parents, Samasoni and Tuiava lopu, of Otara, were in Middlemore Hospital for four days. The community health specialist in South Auckland for the Auckland Area Health Board, Dr Farhat Mahmood, said he understood the two staff members had been transferred to another section of the supermarket where they would not be handling food or food utensils.
No traces of the salmonella bacteria were found in samples of cooked chicken, stuffing and takeaway hotdogs the board tested from the supermarket and a takeaway shop in the area and no food items had been removed from sale, he said.
